Garage door with operator – the safest choice
Garage door with operator – the safest choice
Motorizing your garage door is both practical and safe. Here is an overview of the advantages, what you need to consider, and approximately how much a motor installation costs.
Motorize an older garage door
In most cases, it is possible to install a motor on older garage doors. Normstahl dealers can help install motors on both Normstahl garage doors and other brands. A popular choice is the modern SPARK operator, which works with many different door models.
Installation of operator
The installation of an operator on your garage door must be carried out correctly in accordance with applicable regulations. Although private individuals are allowed to install the motor themselves, Normstahl recommends that the work be carried out by an experienced installer – especially if the garage is located in a communal area where other people are present, such as in a row of garages.
Since a motorized garage door is considered a machine, it is important that safety requirements are met and that all technology works as it should.
Emergency solutions in the event of a power failure
It should always be possible to open the garage door manually if the power fails or if the remote control stops working. This can be achieved in two ways:
- From inside, via a separate door to the garage
- From outside, via an emergency release connected to the engine
If you have an existing manual lock, a cable can be connected to the operator so that disengagement occurs via the handle. Alternatively, an external emergency disengagement can be installed.
This is a simple but crucial safety measure to avoid costly damage to the door in the event of a breakdown.
Lifespan and maintenance
Normstahl garage door openers often have a service life of 10–20 years or more. Any problems are usually related to the electronics rather than the mechanics. Dealers can help with troubleshooting and reprogramming if necessary.
The operator also benefits from regular use – if it is left unused for several years, the risk of faults increases.
For optimal performance, both the garage door and operator should be checked once or twice a year, and more often if used frequently. Check:
- That the garage door can be easily opened manually (disconnect the operator)
- The drive belt
- The operator screws and fastenings
Normstahl offers maintenance plans for both garage doors and garage door openers.
Spare parts and service
Normstahl supplies spare parts for most products. If a specific part is no longer available, it is usually possible to find a replacement. It is often not necessary to replace the entire garage door opener – sometimes it is enough to replace a smaller component. For example, do you have a Magic 1000 or 600 that needs repairing?

Electrical connection for motorizing your garage door
The operator is connected with a standard plug. There should therefore be an electrical outlet near the intended installation site. In a standard garage, the operator is located approximately 3.5 meters inside the garage. For taller garage doors, the operator is placed slightly further inside.
Control the motor with a remote control or app
Electric garage doors can be controlled using an app and/or remote control. The SPARK operator comes with app control as standard – the same app used for Yale – making it easy to open and close the garage door using your mobile phone. Many people also choose a code lock or wall button as a complement.
